Revolutionizing Waste Management: The Jeram Waste-to-Energy Project
Published: 10.18.2023
Malaysia inaugurated its first waste-to-energy plant at Bukit Tagar EnviroParks, a vital step towards sustainable development. Minister Nga Kor Ming stressed its potential in converting landfills into energy sources, aligning with Malaysia's goal to lead in renewable energy by 2035. The project addresses waste challenges while advancing the nation's renewable energy agenda and carbon reduction efforts.
In a visionary step towards sustainable waste management and clean energy production, Selangor's Waste-to-Energy (WTE) project in Jeram is set to revolutionize how the state handles solid waste. Scheduled for operational commencement in 2026, this collaborative initiative between Worldwide Holdings Bhd (WHB) and Shanghai Electric Power Generation (M) Sdn Bhd signifies a leap forward in employing cutting-edge technology tailored for the predominantly urban landscape of the state.
The project, situated on a 12-hectare expanse, holds the capacity to process an impressive 3,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, concurrently generating a substantial 52 megawatts (MW) of electricity per hour. The efficient technology employed is designed not only to address waste disposal but also to significantly reduce land use, potentially curbing it by up to 80%. Furthermore, this venture is anticipated to bolster environmental conservation efforts and create new economic opportunities for the region.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari underscored the reduced dependency on traditional landfills, estimating that a substantial portion of land designated for waste disposal would remain unused. He emphasized that within the WTE project's operational tenure, landfill spaces like Tanjung 12 in Banting and potentially Jeram would see extended survival, delaying the urgency to scout for new landfill sites.
Addressing concerns raised by some parties regarding incinerators, Amirudin emphasized that the modern incineration technology employed in this project vastly differs from the practices of the 80s or 90s. It incorporates state-of-the-art methodologies that prioritize environmental preservation, ensuring a minimal environmental footprint while effectively managing waste.
The Jeram Waste-to-Energy Project is emblematic of Selangor's dedication to sustainable urban development and environmental stewardship. It showcases the integration of innovative technologies to pave the way for a greener and economically prosperous future, positioning Selangor at the forefront of sustainable waste management and renewable energy generation.
