Michigan Completes Installation of Nation's First Wireless-Charging Public Roadway
Published: 12.4.2023
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and partners have completed the installation of the nation's first wireless-charging public roadway. The roadway, which is located in Detroit, is equipped with inductive-charging coils that will charge electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with Electreon receivers as they drive on the road.
The first wireless-charging public roadway in Detroit is a game-changer for electric vehicles. With wireless charging, EV owners can enjoy a convenient and efficient way to charge their vehicles, eliminating range anxiety.
The Michigan pilot project is a collaboration between MDOT, Electreon, and the City of Detroit. The project is funded by a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
The roadway is expected to be operational in early 2024.
The future of wireless charging
Wireless charging is still in its early stages of development, but it has the potential to revolutionize the transportation industry. Wireless charging could make EVs more affordable, convenient, and efficient, and it could help to reduce range anxiety.
The Michigan pilot project is an important step toward the development of a nationwide network of wireless charging stations. If the project is successful, it could pave the way for the widespread adoption of EVs.
