China's Total Telecom Business Volume Increased by 16.8% from January to July 2023

From January to July 2023, the overall operation of China's information and communication industry was good. The revenue and total volume of telecommunications services have steadily increased, and emerging businesses such as cloud computing continue to play a leading role. The construction of new infrastructure such as 5G, gigabit optical network, and the Internet of Things is steadily advancing, and the scale of network-connected users continues to expand.
The growth rate of telecommunications business revenue and total volume remained stable. From January to July, the cumulative revenue of the telecommunications business reached 1,005.6 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.2%. The total telecommunications business volume, calculated based on unchanged prices last year, increased by 16.8% year-on-year.
The growth rate of fixed internet broadband business revenue has slightly increased. Three top carriers (China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom) achieved internet broadband business revenue of 151.9 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.6%, accounting for 15.1% of telecommunications business revenue, an increase of 0.1 percentage points compared to the first half of the year, and driving a growth of 1 percentage point in telecommunications business revenue.
Mobile data traffic business revenue is growing at a low rate and the top three major players achieved a revenue of 390 billion yuan from mobile data traffic business, a year-on-year increase of 0.4%, accounting for 38.8% of telecommunications business revenue, driving a 0.2 percentage point increase in telecommunications business revenue.
Emerging business revenue has grown rapidly. Three top carriers are actively developing emerging businesses such as IPTV, internet data centers, big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. From Jan to Jul, they achieved a total revenue of 212.9 billion yuan from emerging businesses, a year-on-year increase of 19%, accounting for 21.2% of telecommunications revenue, driving a 3.6 percentage point increase in telecom revenue. Among them, cloud computing and big data revenue increased by 35.5% and 42.2% year-on-year, respectively, while IoT business revenue increased by 25.7% year-on-year.
The revenue from voice services has slightly declined. From Jan to Jul, three top carriers achieved fixed voice and mobile voice business revenue of 11.19 billion yuan and 66.59 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 8% and 2%, respectively. They accounted for a total of 7.7% of telecommunications business revenue, a year-on-year decrease of 0.7 percentage points.
